A Smallpdf alternative that never uploads your files
Smallpdf is a Swiss company with a broad, well-built PDF suite and a serious security posture — ISO 27001 certification, EU-hosted infrastructure and a published deletion policy. It is a good product. The difference is not care; it is architecture. Using Smallpdf means your document is transmitted to a third party and held there for up to an hour.
Every claim about Smallpdf on this page links to Smallpdf’s own documentation and was checked in August 2026. If something here is out of date, it is a mistake rather than a tactic — our own posture is documented too.
Smallpdf and Benchnook, side by side
| Smallpdf | Benchnook | |
|---|---|---|
| Where files are processed | On Smallpdf servers. Files are uploaded, processed, and returned.[source] | In the browser tab, by WebAssembly and Canvas. There is no upload endpoint to send them to. |
| How long files are retained | Permanently removed from their servers one hour after processing. Files kept in an account stay until you delete them.[source] | Not applicable — nothing is ever received, so there is nothing to retain or delete. |
| Encryption | 256-bit TLS in transit.[source] | No. There is no login, no profile and no email collected. |
| Certifications | ISO 27001 certified; states GDPR and CCPA compliance.[source] | Yes, once the page has loaded — the processing needs no network at all. |
Our column is the same inventory as our privacy page, which lists every request the app can make.
Where the difference actually matters
The file leaves your machine, or it does not
This is the whole distinction, and it is binary. With Smallpdf your document is transmitted to a third party under their terms and held for up to an hour. With Benchnook there is no upload endpoint — the WebAssembly that edits your PDF runs in your tab. You can confirm it in DevTools: open the Network panel, merge a PDF, and watch nothing leave.
Confidentiality obligations do not care how careful the recipient is
If a document is privileged, under NDA, or covered by a data-processing agreement you signed with a client, transmitting it to a third party is a disclosure that needs authorisation — whether or not that third party is ISO 27001 certified and deletes it within the hour. Not transmitting it removes the question rather than answering it.
It keeps working with the network off
Because nothing is sent, nothing has to be reachable. Benchnook works on a plane, on hotel wifi, and inside a network that blocks file-sharing domains outright.
What Smallpdf does better
- ISO 27001 certified — an independent audit of their security management, which we have not undergone.
- A mature e-signature product with legal weight behind it. We do not do e-signatures at all.
- Sync, storage and team accounts across devices — the direct consequence of holding your files, and genuinely useful if you want it.
- Desktop and mobile apps, and a much longer track record than ours.
If one of those is what you need, use Smallpdf. This page is here to help you pick, not to win.
The Benchnook tools that cover this
- PDFFill, protect, and edit PDFs
- CompressShrink images without losing quality
- ConvertConvert any file to any format
- MetadataInspect and strip photo metadata

Questions people ask
Is Smallpdf unsafe?
No, and this page does not claim it is. Smallpdf is ISO 27001 certified, uses TLS in transit, hosts in the EU, and deletes files an hour after processing. The difference is architectural: their model requires receiving your file, and ours does not.
What can Smallpdf do that Benchnook cannot?
E-signatures, cloud storage and sync across devices, team accounts, and desktop and mobile apps. They also hold an ISO 27001 certification that we do not. If you need any of those, Smallpdf is the better tool.
How can I verify that Benchnook does not upload my files?
Open your browser DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and use any tool. No request carries your file, because there is no endpoint that accepts one. You can also disconnect from the internet after the page loads and keep working.
Is there a file size limit?
The limit is your device memory rather than a plan tier, because the work happens on your own hardware. Large video is the practical ceiling.
